Ga'afar, you are really getting to the crux of the meaning. But I never heard Sana'a called Awal. It was called Azal (and peotically it is sometimes still called Azal, but Awal that is news to me and I was born in Sana'a. In any case, you present an interesting argument.

Ah, Arabic Medical, you are so persevering. No, this simply has to do with deck logs or records on deck of boats or ship. I believe Ga'afar and I are in concurrence on this, but why ����? Maybe we will not know, I guess.

I have found in various web sites on shipping and navigation what they call a ship's deck log, which is the closest to the context use. But I am curious to know what ���� really means and why they put this word in the log for the deck and the engines log?

Log Book

Today, any bound record kept on a daily basis aboard ship is called a "log." Originally, records were kept on the sailing ships by inscribing information into shingles cut from logs and hinged so they opened like books.When paper became more readily available, log books were manufactured from paper and bound. Shingles were relegated to naval museums, but the slang word stuck.

Arab Medical, I sympathize with your frustration. I looked in all the Arabic sites on shipping and believe me I never saw the word. Actually log alone would suffice, as the US Merchant Marine uses Deck Log, Engine Log, Oil Log, etc. Thanks to Ga'afar and Arab Medical for helping with effort and having a little fun while we go for it. "

It could be أحوال

That makes sense

Try this

I found two meanings on the net regarding the word أوال>> an old name for Bahrain, and as a word used instead of أوائل>> guess none goes with your context.

Try searching a monolingual Arabic Dic. or just ask your client.

Wait I found something: أوال might stand for the English word AWAL, which stands for : Absent Without Authorized Leave.

Deck Logs: Purpose, and Content
A Navy ship\'s deck log is a daily chronology of certain events for administrative and legal purposes. Preparation of logs is governed by the current edition of Office of the Chief of Naval Operations Instruction 3100.7 (OPNAVINST 3100.7) series. This specifies the kinds of events to be entered:

Guess the item \"Absentees\" supports my answer. But as a deck log is a much wider meaning here, then I\'ll suggest:

I don\'t know wordforword, but I still think that أوال here is the English word AWAL. I searched for it in different Arabic dictionaries today, and found absolutely nothing that can go with your context :(
