Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (2): translatol, Randa Farhat

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

ahmed ismaiel owieda Jun 2, 2004:
for Mr. Zeid El Din, shadadah (as a noun) was mentioned in the Quran with only two meanings: testimony "wa la taktomo al shahada" plus other ayaat, and "the visible" aalem al ghayb wa al shahada
Aisha Maniar Jun 2, 2004:
What's your actual question? Do you want to know what this word means or how to write it in Arabic? What?
Alaa Zeineldine Jun 2, 2004:
The word may have different meanings depending on the context. Can you mention the ayah (passage) in the Quran that you need. just the surah and ayah number would be sufficient.

testimony - the visible

shahada in Quran occured with only two meanings:
1- testimony: as in "wa la taktomo al shahada" "thou shalt not hideth a testimony"
2- the visible (what is seen to all people): as in "aalem al ghayb wa al shahada"Knower of the invisible and the visible"
as for martyrdom, it was never used in Quran as "shahada"
IT IS used in all religious contexts as so, but not in the Quran

agree translatol : Thank you Ahmed for supplying the necessary Quran citations.

thanks so much
agree Randa Farhat : also, the Shahadah (utter the Tashahhud): There's no God but God and Muhammad is God's Apostle

well dear colleague, the context here is Quran in specific, not religion at large, so, i think the two equivalents i provided are the only valid equivalents, wa allaho a3lam

thanks so much
agree Mohamed Abdel-Aziz : I agree with you. Shahada has only those meanings in the Quran. Martyrdom has been called shehada probably because of an interpretation of 3:140, although it literally only means taking witnesses.

certificate / testimony / affidavit / statement / martyrdom

according to context, it could be:
credential: voucher, warranty, warrant, certificate, diploma, security, certification

OR
testimony: sworn evidence, legal evidence, deposition, affidavit, attestation, oath

OR
martyrization, martyrdom

I hope it helps
Peer comment(s):

neutral ahmed ismaiel owieda : you must transcend the dictionary meaning and cling to the context :)

agree Randa Farhat : since the asker categorized the question under "religion", Shahadah here can be: 1) Testimony, to testify; 2) To utter/bare witness (to say the Shahadah/Tashahhud); and, 3) Martyrdom, to martyrize
