I'm not sure what this means in this context. Does it mean something like 'as a role model to us?'

I know the father was doing good deeds, but not sure what the end of the sentence means.

صرت أبحث لي فيه عن مجد خالد لم يفلح أبي رغم كل صنائعه مع الناس في بنائه لنا
