Oxymoron or the interaction of opposites.


وقد درّست بعض أدبه في الجامعة، في التسعينيات، وخلصت إلى أنّ شعريّة نصّه، مأتاها لعبة «الضديد» (الأوكسيمور)، والمفارقة حيث الكلمات تبتني لنفسها حضورا لغويّا كليّا وزمنا خاصّا يندّ عن أيّ ضبط وقياس.

أقدّر أيضا أنّ الجمع بين «نوافر الأضداد» بعبارة أبي تمّام أو «الضديد» هو مزيّة هذا الشعر ومن أخصّ خصائصه.

In Arabic:
ومن الفنون البديعيّة الطريفة في شعر أبي تمام ما يعرف " بنوافر الأضداد " وهو يشبه الطّباق من حيث إنه يتناول المعنى وضده ولكن بأسلوب أكثر عمقاً كما في البيت التالي :

هي البدرُ يُغْنيها تَوَدُّدُ وْجْهِها إلى كلّ من لاقت وإن لم تودَّدِ

فالشاعر يطابق بين " التودُّدُ وعدمه " على النحو غير مألوف، فالمرأة التي يصفها لا تظهر الود، بل تأبى وتصرّ على التمنّع ولكن وجهها ببهائه وروائههو الذي يتودد إلى من يراه.

In the third part of the book the present author derives Abu Tammam's opinions about poetry from his well-known Hamd.sah-dnlho\ogy. In the Hamdsah. as in his own poetry, metaphors and the dialectical interaction of opposites function as means of perception and exegesis.

While "oxymoron" appears to be a well-established term, "the interaction of opposites" might be better in this context because it is to be used as the translation of a phrase seemingly coined and exclusively used by this poet. But the problem is that I am not sure to what extent the latter conveys the intended meaning.

Personally, I would avoid what I suggested and use this one because I tend to prefer avoiding "oxymoron" for the reason explained above, and I like to be on the safe side as well: Unlike "the interaction of opposites," this phrase appears in more than one source.


Syntax also includes the author’s variations of sentence components as an element of style used to emphasize his message.

Some common variations of emphasis are:
word order (inversion)
juxtaposition of opposites (oxymoron)
repetition of words, phrases or clauses
rhetorical questions to explore ideas (not expecting and answer)
variations of punctuation

The careful reader will spot them easily.
