IMO both 'wish' and 'hope' are fine
but 'willingness to understand' seems to be missing from all other answers, apart from Tomek's (yet a minute criticism here: it seems to me that 'make an effort' (postarac sie) requires some action (actual effort) and it feels like a bit more than just 'be willing')
