Lohnmälzungsvertrag

German to English Law/Patents Law: Contract(s) Brewing
This is the title of a contract where both parties are in Austria and one of the parties is a Malzfabrik (malt producer) and the other is a brewer. I have seen general references to Lohnmalzung in the BGB, but almost no breakdown of the word anywhere. I figure the contract deals with the sale of malt for brewing, but I have problems figuring out the combination "Lohnmälzung". Could anybody with a background here supply information? Thanks for your help.

@richmonibudd: I confirm Andrew's explanation. "Lohn-" means that, rather than malting for their own use and product, the company is doing it for somebody else, as a contractor, and will be paid for this process only. I work in brewing, bottling and packing and there is a lot of this. Large, well-known soft drinks companies often work with "contract bottlers" or "contract packers". However, I guess, you could leave the "contract" out, if your context makes it clear what the relationship between the two contracting companies is.

Lohn- The work is being 'contracted out'. See links to the three previous KudoZ questions posted below as part of my answer. 'Barley Malting Agreement' may be sufficient on its own. Your terminology query was, however, Lohnmälzungsvertrag.

Clarification Reading the contract and several entries and checking a couple of sources, the translation appears to be "Barley Malting Agreement" or "Agreement to Malt Barley." I have actually done these kind of contracts before, but in Slovak (Sladovanie jacmena). It was the first word "Lohn" that threw me off, since that means remuneration. My usual German-English project manager flagged this alternative meaning of "Lohn". Can anyone confirm?

It fit the description, though I debated between "contract" and "contracted", and agree that "contract" is better. I appreciate very much the examples from other German langauge translators for the prefix "Lohn". It was extremely helpful Because of previous experience with translating these type of contracts from Slovak, once I got past a few problem words, the contract itself was easy. It was just the first one I have ever seen from German."
