Sad, aye? Thanks, Maciej ;)

@Bubz Right you are. But the Asker knows better ;-)
Beata Claridge Feb 6, 2011:
a type of uniform worn in the street, sorry
Beata Claridge Feb 6, 2011:
@ Maciejm You wrote "raczej po ulicy w tym hełmie nie chodził" to comment on IRA100's answer. Well, the truth is that this is exactly what he did. "Wyjsciowy" as opposed to "galowy" is a type of uniform in the street - very elegant, yet one step below ceremonial.
Look at some pics I attached to my answer and think of some Polish movies from this ere, "Lalka" for example - I can remember vividly these officers parading through Lazienkowski Park in their full uniforms wearing exactly these types of helmets adorned with colourful feathers on top.
NB. this helmet would not be a part of a Polish uniform because as far as I know there was no Polish army at that time

Jerry Dean (asker) Feb 4, 2011:
the helmet is from the 19th century

ceremonial helmet

I think the helmet was worn on special ocasions.

"This is a Metropolitan Police Chief Superintendents Ceremonial helmet - dating from between 1938 - 1952.
This is a very high quality helmet manufactured by Compton & Webb with gunmetal coloured fittings and a multi piece helmet plate which, interestingly, does not carry any 'Metropolitan Police' wording but has the motto of the Order of the Garter. The chinchain and centre band are off a roped pattern and the chinchain hooks up at the back when not in use in a similar way to the older military helmets."

parade helmet

I agree with IRA100 that we need to distinguish between "galowy" and "wyjsciowy", where "galowy" is reserved for special (celebratory) ocassions while "wyjsciowy" is simply worn every day in non-combat situations - streetware, really
wiki confirms this classification
