Haven't had any bad experiences with Hetzner as a webhost for several years. I have been using a "bare" VPS server with full root access from the outset but AIUI they also offer pretty cheap managed hosting, including e-mail hosting, for the less tech-savvy.

Hello everyone,

I find this alternative very interesting. Worth looking into: the explanations of use are very well detailed. HTML, PHP, FTP. The only drawback, but it is not very significant, is the lack of email support.

Hi everyone,

I have been hosting my website with proz.com for years now, and my domain name too. Now, I am trying to submit a support ticket to proz.com to ask for help with migrating to another provider, accessing my old site via the cPanel, etc. However, when I go to the Help page, I cannot see how you are meant to submit a support ticket.

Free hosting, just provide the domain name (approx. EUR 10/year).

Probably geared to the tech savvy, but pages are edited with markdown, it's no rocket science.

Hi Henry and ProZ.com crew,

First of all, thanks for providing a hosting service all this time.

I remember several afternoons spent eons ago sorting thru some odd feature buried in the depths of cPanel, but overall, I am quite sorry to see it go. I was looking for a "freebie" service that is basic, functional, and doesn't inundate me with ads or other random cyber-nag-ware, but at a loss for where to look. That's not a cry for help...just an observation.

The purpose of this posting is to provide notice that the ProZ.com hosting service will be wound down in the coming months.

Background

In August, 2015, it was announced that no new ProZ.com hosting accounts would be accepted.

The message sent at the time read:

For this reason, as of August 2015 the ProZ.com hosting service has been suspended. Full members who already had hosting accounts through ProZ.com may maintain their existing accounts, but no new accounts are being created."

Coming changes

The next step is now being taken toward ending the ProZ.com hosting service. Effective December 1, 2020, all ProZ.com hosting accounts will be shut down, and domain renewals will no longer be possible through ProZ.com.

Steps to take

If you are an active user of ProZ.com hosting, either for email or website hosting, you will need to migrate to another service provider.

There are many hosting providers on the internet. Some well-known ones are Bluehost and Dreamhost. You may find others more suitable given your needs, location, language and so on. Migrating involves transferring your domain to the new provider, then moving over data such as html files and so on.

It is our intention as ProZ.com staff members to help ensure that migration is as easy as possible for you, and that none of your data is lost. We have started a thread on the forum where people can discuss different options. If you require additional assistance, staff members are also available to help you complete the migration. Please enter a support ticket.

The ProZ.com hosting service will be unavailable for up to 3 hours while scheduled maintenance is performed, between Thursday, 19 March 2020 9:00pm EDT (GMT-4) and Friday, 20 March 2020 1:00am EDT (GMT-4).

During this maintenance, all hosting services including web and email will be unavailable. Email will not be delivered during this time, but it will be queued by the sending server and delivered after the maintenance is complete.

Most ProZ.com users will not be affected by this issue. It only affects users of the legacy ProZ.com hosting service, which was closed to new signups in 2015.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please submit a support request.

To move the mail server, you need a host to accept your email.

The technical part is actually quiet easy. All you need is Outlook.

If you were using a POP3 connection, all your mail is already saved on your computer.

If you were using IMAP, just create a local copy of the email on the server, switch settings to the new provider, and copy your locally saved mail to the server.

It just takes time if you don't have a fast connection. If you require further assistance, let me know :)

Thanks. After waiting almost seven hours for the initial response to my latest support request (hosting down, site and mail both offline) only to have the ticket assigned to someone in Canada where the time is 3:00 a.m., I've made the decision after 15 years to cut ties, something I probably should have done some time ago.

Is there a way on your side to somehow preempt this problem as it is occurring every year? Every single time I have to send a support request or post on the forum so that it is taken care of.
Here are my past support tickets on this issue:

If you are purchasing only a single year certificate, it is going to expire on the same day every year (April 5 next year, because you renewed it today.) It blows my mind how you guys cannot put a reminder on your own calendars to take care of it. I missed TWO job offers this morning from one of my regular clients who sends email notifications when jobs are available on their platform. I was unable to get into my email because the security certificate dialog box blocked everything. As you can guess, I am more than disappointed.
This is a recurring issue because someone regularly FORGETS to renew that certificate.
Does GoDaddy offer auto-renewal for the security certificates the same way as they offer for everything else?

I guess I have to put a reminder on my own calendar to send in a support request on April 3 or so every year to prevent this.

Here we go again, I am unable to send or receive email via my hosted email account, neither using IMAP, nor POP3.
I started a new thread because the previous discussion (from yesterday) was deemed solved/closed, with the thread title modified.
The problem is clearly not solved in a long-lasting fashion.

My email client has finally been able to connect, but I agree that it's not 100% "there" yet. Connection still fails on several occasions, and email download is rather slow. I will also update my support ticket with this information.

@Jared, do you think ProZ can provide an explanation as to what happened?
