Interactive MT has been a research topic at the periphery of MT research since the late '60s. In an interactive MT system, the human translator and the machine agent collaboratively create translations. The MT system's role is to augment rather than to replace the human translator. TransType, CasmaCat, and ALPS are all examples of academic systems that implemented this idea.

A few of us at Stanford began working on an interactive MT system in 2011. About 50 Proz users participated in the research user studies conducted throughout 2014. After I graduated in 2015, we decided to commercialize our research prototype, which we called Predictive Translation Memory. John DeNero, with whom I worked on Google Translate in 2011, is a co-founder, and Franz Och, who started the Google Translate group, is our chief advisor.

The product that we've built, Lilt, is now publicly available. To our knowledge, it's the first commercial statistical interactive MT system. It also includes a traditional TM and a "lexicon," which is reminiscent of the single-word query Google Translate UI (which John built while at Google). It's free during our public trial period. We welcome your feedback!

Hi Piotr!

Yes, our language support is necessarily limited right now. In the next month we will be releasing Fr-En, De-En, and EnPt.

You're not the first to ask for Polish, so we will add it to our list.

Hi Dan: Zh-En will probably be the first CJK pair that we add. CJK target languages will require some redesign of the autocomplete interaction.

Right, so there's nothing fundamentally different? Well that's good. Would be nice to have access to similar resources to those enjoyed by European language pair translators, including Lilt.

PS: Jan 5, 2016

HTML code in someone's post has messed up this page. This happened to me too several times in the past, and was usually solved by deleting specific code (can't remember now what it was exactly) in my post.

I think it was you, Dan, in your post titled: "Any non-European languages?"

Edited to add that the offending HTML code has now been removed... See more

For an English target there are no changes required. We just need MT training data, which is a little harder to obtain in sufficient volumes for CJK language pairs. CJK targets will require some interface interventions.

Only Spanish-English are supported! Jan 6, 2016

You should have said so when you posted this.
Your product does not seem to be ready for the Big Time.

Hi Susan!

Thanks for trying Lilt. Actually, we support EnEs, En>Fr, and En>De right now. We're adding Fr>En and De>En next week, and EnPt the week after that. We don't support En-Ru yet!

You might not have noticed that the list of target languages changes based on the source language that you select.

Correct. And when you select English as the source language, you will see that the list of target languages in the target dropdown will change. You should see French and German appear as options.

Adding two more language pairs Jan 23, 2016

As promised---although a little later than anticipated---Fr>En and De>En are now live. EnPt will be released in about two weeks.

Hello Spence,

Your software seems interesting. Any plans for En>It?
